Looking Backwards

Feb. 14, 1874

Miss May Scheeley has been placed on both tickets in the 4th Ward, Williamsport, for School Director.

Dr. J. J. Leiser, formerly of this place, has moved to Watsontown, where he purchased the drug store.

The Hook and Ladder Co., will give a musical and dramatic entertainment in Smiths’ Hall, on Saturday evening.

Feb. 10, 1883

A very gay sleighing party of young people spent last Friday evening with Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Everett, near Hughesville.

Thomas C. Mendenball, one of the oldest and respected citizens of Pennsdale, died on Sunday, aged 87 years.

Daniel Ritter will take charge of the “Parker House” on April 1st.

H.D. Gold of Clarkstown has purchased the farm of B. H. Barto, near Turbotville.

Edward Deegan who was thrown from his sled upon his head one day last week, died from his injuries last Sunday.

Feb. 15, 1923

Several weeks ago H.C. Confer of North Market street received word that his son, Irvin, had ben waylaid and robbed at Long Beech, California, the unfortunate young man having been found by an officer lying on the sidewalk on one of the streets of that resort, after having been relieved of $450.00 in money and a grip in which he carried some clothing.

Died: Martha Browne Peaslee, died at the home of her son, Clarence L. Peaslee, Esq. Williamsport, Friday, aged 76 years; Mary Meginness, died Tuesday morning; J. Henry Snyder, Pennsdale’s oldest resident, died Tuesday in his 82nd year; Martha Lucille Kreppenneck, the 11 month old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Kreppenneck, Muncy, died Wednesday morning; Mary Viola Yost, aged 19 years, died at the home of her sister, Mrs. Boyer, in Lewis township on Wednesday afternoon.

Ina Mae Danley, of Hughesville, became the bride of Joseph E. Coonce, of Wyoming, on Dec. 23.

A wedding took place on Jan. 20 of Miss Pegi Jean Huff, of Montgomery, to Gary Lee Shaner, Hughesville.

Illness

Emmanuel Gautsch is ill at his home with diphtheria.

Mrs. Horace Lovelace is confined to her bed by illness.

Miss Phoebe Heywood, who has been seriously ill at her home on Third street with diphtheria, is improving.

Ruth, little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Opp, underwent an operation at the Williamsport hospital on Tuesday and is reported as getting along nicely.

Picture Rocks

Derr Haynes of New York is visiting sister, Mrs. Lloyd Holdren and family.

W.H. Bower fractured several ribs as a result of a fall while going to his work on Friday.

The American Legion auxiliary will hold a tureen supper in the Legion rooms Tuesday, February 6.

Marcella Confer, Ralph Eddy, Glenn Bower, Clyde Campbell, George McClain, Ralph Farrar, Vernon Clapp and John Mincemoyer attended the Sonestown-Dushore basketball game at Sonestown Friday.

Weddings

Miss Margaret Marie Rich, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M.B. Rich, of Woolrich, and James O. Corson, son of Dr. and Mrs. J.M. Corson, of Hughesville, were married at the home of the bride’s parents in Woolrich on Saturday by Dr. Ezra H. Yocum. They were unattended and only members of the immediate family were present at the ceremony. The bride was given in marriage by her father. The wedding march was played by Mrs. Robert L. Leinbach of New Haven, Conn., a sister of the bride. Before the ceremony, Mrs. Robert Smith, a sister of the bridegroom sang De Koven’s “O Promise Me.” The bride wore gray crepe meteor and carried orchids and lilies of the valley. The bride is a graduate of Dickinson seminary and of the Leslie School, Cambridge, Mass. The bridegroom is also a graduate of Dickinson seminary.

Miss Myrtle Heywood, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E.R. Heywood, former pastor of the Baptist Church of Hughesville, and William Boyer, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. William Boyer, were married Monday evening at 6 o’clock at the Boyer home near town. The ceremony was performed by the bride’s father in the presence of a few close friends. Following the ceremony, a wedding dinner was served.
