Over the decades, the Grammy Awards has been held up as a showcase of excellent musical talent, and the best that the business has to offer.
Audiences have seen numerous antics from the stars over the years, but there have been some moments that have really stood out.
Bob Dylan interrupted
While Bob Dylan was performing at the 1998 Grammys, he was interrupted by crasher Michael Portnoy, who was supposed to be an extra on stage. However, instead of dancing in place as he was supposed to, Portnoy moved to the front of the stage and removed his shirt, revealing the words ‘Soy Bomb’ written across his chest.
Though the baffling episode was later explained by the crasher himself as “what I think art should be”, it’s unclear what it had to do with Bob Dylan’s performance.
In 2016, the ‘Like a Rolling Stone’ singer was awarded a Nobel Prize, as the organization said in a statement that he “created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition”.
An unlikely Elton John duet
Elton John and Eminem surprised fans with a shared performance of ‘Stan’ at the 2001 Grammys. The unlikely pair’s duet came after Eminem’s lyrics were criticized for homophobic content, while Elton John is an openly gay artist.
In a 2004 interview on MTV news, Eminem, who also goes by Marshall Matters, said he didn’t know much about Elton John other than that he could sing.
“I didn’t know he was gay. I didn’t know anything about his personal life. I didn’t really care, Eminem said “But being that he was gay and he had my back, I think it made a statement in itself saying that he understood where I was coming from.”
Jennifer Hudson sings a Whitney Houston tribute
Jennifer Hudson sang a tribute to Whitney Houston at the 2012 Grammy Awards, just hours after the famous singer was found dead in her hotel room.
She sang ‘I Will Always Love You’, which stirred up incredible emotions for the audience.
M.I.A performs on her due date
M.I.A. performed on the day of her due date at the 2009 Grammy Awards. She took the stage with Jay-Z, Kanye West, T.I., and Lil Wayne to sing ‘Swagga Like Us’, and though she could have gone into labor at any moment, the star easily moved around the stage.
Kesha and Lauper bring all the girls together
At the 2018 Grammy Award show, Kesha joined ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun’ singer Cyndi Lauper, along with other heavy-hitting female singers, Bebe Rexha, Andra Day, Julia Michaels, and Camila Cabello. Kesha and Lauper led the team in a moving rendition of the song ‘Praying’.
