Soho’s GAY nightclub awaits crucial late-night licence decision – City A.M.

A hearing is currently taking place regarding the late-night licence of G-A-Y, a legnadary Soho night club.

The club, one of the most famous LGBTQ night venues in the world, is having its application to stay open until 4am heard by Westminster City Council’s Licensing sub-committee.

The outcome is being watched closely by those in the industry who want London to become a 24-hour city. Last year controversy over the closure of Farringdon nightclub Fabric led to questions over Sadiq Khan’s commitment to London’s night life.

Rising rents and business rates added an extra £100,000 of outgoings per year to the bill of clubs in the area last year. G-A-Y is arguing that the revenue taken from a late licence would offset the “ridiculous” rent hike of £400,000.

The decision could also come under scrutiny from London’s LGBTQ community.

More than half (58 per cent) of LGBTQ venues have closed in the last ten years according to UCL’s LGBTQ+ Cultural Infrastructure in London report. This represents a higher proportion than other venues.
